Now Open for Applications: Ocean Innovation Prize

US$1 Million Ocean Innovation Prize Launched Today

Presented by the Blue Climate Initiative, an endorsed programme of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, in collaboration with the Sustainable Ocean Alliance.
As part of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (‘the Ocean Decade’), the Blue Climate Initiative is thrilled to announce the launch of a global US$1 Million Ocean Innovation Prize to inspire, fund and support innovations that mitigate climate change through ocean-related strategies.

The Prize is designed to advance the goals of the Ocean Decade, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. Prize money will be awarded for innovations that enable climate change mitigation through ocean-related and knowledge-based solutions inspired by the Blue Climate Initiative’s Transformational Opportunities. Proposals must incorporate an innovative and scalable technology, practice, model, approach or idea.

How to apply for the Ocean Innovation Prize.

The Ocean Innovation Prize is all about impact. We will be supporting and accelerating innovations that have the greatest potential for meaningful impact on climate change in the short time we have available before encountering the worst of the consequences.

- Stanley Rowland, CEO of the Blue Climate Initiative

The Ocean Decade will only be a success if ocean science is translated into innovative and scalable solutions that protect the ocean and ensure that it can underpin human wellbeing. The Ocean Innovation Prize will catalyse actors around the world to come together to develop creative and cutting-edge solutions to arguably the greatest challenge facing the ocean today. We are proud that the Blue Climate Initiative is one of the endorsed programs of the Ocean Decade and encourage wide participation in the Ocean Innovation Prize.

- Dr Vladimir Ryabinin, Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO.

Proclaimed in 2017, the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (‘the Ocean Decade’) seeks to stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation to reverse the decline of the state of the ocean system and catalyse new opportunities for sustainable development of this massive marine ecosystem. The vision of the Ocean Decade is ‘the science we need for the ocean we want’. The Ocean Decade provides a convening framework for scientists and stakeholders from diverse sectors to develop the scientific knowledge and the partnerships needed to accelerate and harness advances in ocean science to achieve a better understanding of the ocean system, and deliver science-based solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda. The UN General Assembly mandated UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) to coordinate the preparations and implementation of the Decade.
